SIMPLE & NOURISHING PRACTICES FOR HORMONAL WELLNESS

Ever since I was a teenager, I became interested in hormonal wellness. I remember getting my first saliva test when I was around 16 years old, to see why I was having such painful cycles each month. After taking a saliva test, and natural supplements, I slowly got back in balance. Little did I know, bath and body works was not my friend.

With an array of chemicals in our air, food and water, we’re all exposed and cannot completely avoid toxins. Although, we can avoid harmful chemicals found in our cleaning and skincare products. Women are especially prone to exposure of these harmful chemicals, as our hormones are more sensitive to imbalances, and we generally use more skincare products than men.

While I don’t like to mention it, or think of it, I’ll soon have a teenager of my own. And so, hormonal wellness is at the forefront of our minds. I find myself sounding a lot like a mama bear lately, and well, I am. I talk daily to my daughter about the benefits of eating well, hydrating, avoiding excess sugar, and steering clear of too many additives, and chemicals in skincare and cleaning products. It is unfortunate however, that these endocrine disrupting chemicals are found in so. many. products.

Of course, you aren’t going to get deathly ill from one simple exposure. However, the long-term effects of these chemicals building up in our cells over many years, is harmful to our hormonal wellness. And, hormonal wellness, impacts every aspect of our overall well-being. Thyroid, immunity, skin health, and many other body systems are affected by our hormonal balance. Metabolism, sleep, fertility, mood, and energy are all impacted by our hormonal wellness. For example, our thyroid being too low or high, may present as depression or anxiety. So these seemingly small chemicals, in our skincare and cleaning products, may have life altering affects!

Our family is careful to avoid harsh cleaning products, and skincare products with chemicals. Therapeutic grade essential oils have become a favorite in our home, for cleaning, calming, boosting immunity, supporting our skin health, clearing the air of germs, and so much more.

Here’s a few staples we keep in our home for all natural cleaning:

  • distilled white vinegar
  • borax
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • baking soda
  • therapeutic grade essential oils (lemon, thieves, orange, pine, and bergamot are some of our favorite scents)

Did you know, lemon oil and tea tree have shown to kill dust mites?! Simply adding a few drops to your laundry helps keep those pesky bugs at bay. Diffusing is a perfect way to clear the air too. Now that’s it’s Spring, I love cleaning with all the windows open and clearing the stagnant air.

This week, Niah made a simple homemade sugar scrub. Sugar scrub helps clear away dead skin cells, while supporting lymph drainage.

Here’s a super simple recipe to get your skin ready for summer, while supporting your detox pathways:

  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • a few drops of essential oils (bergamot and orange are our favorites. any oils you prefer will do!)

A simple all purpose cleaner is another favorite here too:

  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1 drop all natural dish soap
  • 6 drops lemon or thieves oil
  • fill glass spray bottle with water (purchased on Amazon)

Sunshine and fresh air is one of the best ways to support immunity, and healthy skin, while giving an overall sense of well-being. I hope you enjoy your weekend and stay well!

Best,

Laura
